  4.     Ever since Iraq credited its use of medium-range missiles
  5. against Iran with bringing a halt to the gulf war in 1988, the
  6. regime of President Saddam Hussein has relentlessly pursued
  7. high-tech advances in its military hardware.

  9.     Last week Baghdad claimed to have scored not one but two
  10. such gains: the successful firing of a three-stage rocket
  11. capable of lifting satellites into space, and the test firing
  12. of two surface-to-surface missiles with a range of 1,240 miles,
  13. more than twice that of the ones thought to be currently in the
  14. Iraqi arsenal.

  16.     Both claims had a slightly empty ring. Baghdad almost
  17. certainly does not possess a satellite or the technology to
  18. build one. As for the missiles, Western analysts express some
  19. doubts about the accuracy of any longer-range missiles under
  20. development in Iraq.
